It is after A.C and near around the Fourth century stone made tap and statues artistically decorated and viewing them, we come down to agree that Bajrayogini is probably the ancient religious place of Kathamandu, the capital of Nepal. Inscription found around the temple, it was renovated about five hundred years ago that can be understood through the study of inscription during the period of Pratap Malla.

A religious book written in old Newari Script about the chronological development of Bajrayogini is also safely kept in the library of Denmark. From the study, the outcome of Bajrayogini Devi (goddess), the establishments of Sankhu, the Bajrayogini Fair are to be found as a long tradition.

The Bajrayogini temple is 2.5. K.m. far and is to the north of Sankhu. The very religious place during the Kirat period was given the name Gunbihar (place). The name that resembles the Kirat language is now near Gunbaha.

A three floored temple in pagoda style, and its left side, Dharmaghatu Chaitya. God as well as a two-floored temple of Jogeshwar in the same style is also there which is only one Boudha Chaitya (Monastery) of the world. Even the priest, Shidhiwar do also believe that the Bajrayogini temple is older than the temple of Swoyambhu.

Around the Gunbihar area, there are nine Caves that refer to the Stone Age. In one of the cave, there are two rooms and are rarely found in the world. The priest, the ardent lover of the God goes into the cave for penance. Inside the cave, one enchanted stone made statue is also in the same temple of Bajrayogini. It is reported that stony statues of the cave are brought to another place.

The Bajrayogini Fair continues from Chaitra Purnima (the special day marked in the Calender) up to 8 days which according to English Calendar in A.D. Falls in full Moon of March/April.

A very interesting story about the Bajrayogini Devie's Origin written in the holy book is supposed to have brought in to memory about 200 years ago. According to the book, at the starting of the Snow age and Bhadrakalpo's age from the fork of the stone where the temple is now, came out a five coloured flame and after a long time, there emerged the volcanic Devi (Goddess name). The first priest Gyanacharya Yogi who did penance in the cave, Shidikul Mahabihar and was given Bajracharya Dikshaya (Super knowledge) naming 'Bachashidi Bajracharya with his appointment. The present Priests are generated from the ancestor, Bachashidi Bajracharya.

Upon learning the heritage, the Sankhu Town which is in the shape of a conch-shell. The Devi gave order to Jogdev Bajracharya to build the Sankhu town to run the fair in 1801 Kaligat Sambat. At now, The Sankhu town is also in the same shape. Its legendry name is Shankharapur. Which is still popular with the same name.
